But how about we first look into what solar is? Solar is everything that has to do with the sun, which is that big star shining in our sky providing light and heat. We can collect the energy given to us by the sun and create enough electricity to power our homes, schools and even our toys. Isn’t that neat? Imagine a massive battery in the sky that we can tap into on any given day.
We produce solar energy from either photovoltaic safety panels or mirrors that concentrate sunlight. These panels receive sunlight and convert it into electricity. These panels can be seen on the rooftops of houses or in fields with a lot of sunlight which makes these areas bear most of these panels. They are being used more and more since they are eco-friendly and can also be a great way to help your electricity bill.
Now, most of the time that electricity is coming from burning something – coal, oil or gas or some other form of combustion. Burning these materials for electricity produces significant amounts of pollution. It is not a good pollution for Earth. It can poison our air, give us asthma, and even pollute our drinking water. And that is why we need to figure out how generating electric energy in other ways.
But don’t worry. Solar photovoltaic module is a better option that can assist us with that. And it is a much cleaner, safer way to generate electricity. Using sun energy means that we do not need to burn anything at all and there are no harmful gases or pollutants passing into the atmosphere. And the sun's always shining (even when it's not). That means solar power is a renewable energy, and we can use it over and over again.
Now, let’s simulate the process of sunlight being converted into electricity by these solar panels. Solar panels are composed of many small components (cells). These cells consist of materials known as silicon, used to absorb sunlight. Sunlight that hits these cells releases small (tiny, really) packets of energy known as photons. The cells absorb these photons and convert it to electricity. Isn’t that amazing? Like WITNESSES to some sort of MAGIC.
The power generated from these panels is often direct current (DC). Now, the electricity that powers our homes and schools is known as alternating current (AC). However, in order to utilize the electricity generated by the solar panels we need to convert it from DC into AC. This crucial task is performed by a special device called an inverter, generally located near the solar panels.
This means we release lots of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere when coal or gas is burned for electricity. It is a greenhouse gas itself, meaning CO2 traps sufficient heat in our atmosphere and hence leads to climate change. This photovoltaic panels can cause issues such as increased temperatures, melting ice caps, and more intense storms. Well, that is where the goodness of solar energy comes in, because with solar you do not produce any CO2 or other harmful gas. Well, reduces our carbon footprint on the planet.
